What’s an MLS?

A multiple listing service (MLS) is an organization that offers technological solutions to its licensed members to facilitate real estate transactions. As the multiple listing service for Hampton Roads, REIN maintains the database that real estate brokers use to share listing information on available properties.

The MLS is used by listing brokers to widely share information about their properties with area brokers who may represent or know of potential buyers for properties. This benefits both homebuyers and homesellers. Sellers benefit by gaining increased exposure to their properties, and buyers benefit because they can obtain information about all MLS-listed properties while working with only one broker.

Our History

REIN, Inc. owes its beginning to a small group of 16 real estate brokers who had a vision to form their own MLS.

The first organizational meeting of REIN, then known as Metro MLS, was held November 21, 1969. By December 1, 1969, the company had leased office space in the Byler Building on Virginia Beach Boulevard. From the original 16 stockholder firms that started Metro MLS in 1969, REIN has grown to include more than 670 broker firms (Stockholders and Participants) with more than 820 offices.

In 1997, Metro MLS, Inc. merged with Virginia Peninsula Association of REALTORS® MLS and Real Estate Information Network, Inc. was formed. The two listing services combined their databases into one system — expanding services to include broker firms located in Hampton, Newport News, York County, Gloucester, James City County and surrounding areas.

REIN is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors. The Executive Vice President of REIN is responsible for day-to-day operations and administration.
